The Cake Fairy Delivered Yesterday!

On December 18th, I wrote a blog post about my latest trip to my Alzheimer’s doctor who indicated that my prognosis looked bleak. I mentioned that I would pull myself up from my boot straps, get back to my normal happy self, and that ice cream and Disney cures everything. But the day that I wrote that post, I was having a pity party. I put my blog post on my Facebook page, and some of my friends were commenting. My friend, Carol, who also hails from Michigan mentioned that Sanders Bumpy Cake also is great with ice cream and has been known to cure a few woes.

For those of you who don’t know what Sanders Bumpy Cake is, it is a cake that is famous in Michigan. It is a chocolate fudge cake with a marshmallow cream frosting. Totally decadent and very satisfying. Yesterday, I came home from a day of boating and to my surprise there was a box of six Sanders Bumpy Cakes waiting for me. Yowzer, I hit the jack pot. My diabetic husband was laughing that his glucose level was going to go through the roof, and I was bouncing around the house like a kid at Christmas. You’ve got to be kidding me, six (count them six) Sanders Bumpy Cakes!

The real point of this story though is how kind and considerate people can be. I just met Carol on Facebook in February 2019 when both of our pets became ill from Science Diet dog food. My dog Duncan died and I posted it on Facebook and my post went viral. Carol saw my post, and contacted me because her dog was ill as well and eventually died. A month later I started a Facebook Group called Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time and now I have thousands of followers in that group. Carol and I have been in regular contact. We found out that we both were from Michigan and moved to Florida (living less than an hour apart in both locations). We have become good friends on Facebook and she has become a source of strength for me. Luckily, we both met for lunch with our husbands and we all got along great and I am sure we will have more fun in the future. It’s funny how you meet friends. I am blessed (thank you, Duncan, for introducing us).

It astounds me how nice some people can be. The last two weeks have been very difficult for me as I process the information the doctor gave me. Yet, someone that I have only met once, that I have really only communicated with over the Internet, went out of her way to do something so sweet for me. Carol is an angel. It’s not about the cake (although I am going to savor eating every bit of it), it is the act of kindness, the act of caring that means so much.

Over the last two weeks, I have had so many people reach out to me. Calls from friends checking in on me, people inviting us to activities to keep us busy (and my mind off of this), and hugs. I love hugs. Thank you to all of you who write or call me, invite us to do things, and pray for me and hug me. These acts of kindness help me get through the day and help me stay upbeat and motivated to beat this thing. I don’t know how I can ever repay you. I hope I can make you proud of me and set an example for others.

Thank you, Carol. You are my angel, and I appreciate your kindness.

  1. Kelly you are such a strong woman. What you have done for all of us pet owners is something we could never repay you for. If it weren’t for you my dog would have died. I had no idea that SD was killing my baby. God Bless you and keep being strong. So many are praying for you!!!

    1. Thank you, Janet. I am so glad I could help other people avoid what so many of us have gone through. I am trying to stay strong. Some days are harder than others but I’m a warrior.

  2. Kelly you are amazing, and I’m proud of you for your strength. You are amazing , and I hope to meet you one day. Thank you for all you do for our dogs. Hugs and much love and blessings.

    1. Barbara,
You are more than welcome. I am so glad that as a result of Duncan’s death something positive has come out of it. I hope to meet you one day as well. Happy New Year…….enjoy!

  3. Kelly you really opened our eyes to not only SD dog food- BUT ALL DOG FOOD. Not only dog food- but the food we eat as well. You rattled the cages and you rattled our brains to think. For that- I’m sure everyone of us are very grateful. Tonight I will say a prayer for you. Get better my friend.

    1. Thank you, Maryanne. I agree with you. This has been a sobering and eye opening journey for all of us. I hope I can set an example for people living with Alzheimer’s as well to show how you can make the best out of a really horrible situation.
